Dessert is a stunner- my favourite meal by far! One thing I enjoy about each culture, is its unique take on sweet treats. Desserts tell their own story. I don't quite feel like I've bonded with a country until I've tasted their desserts! I'm an unapologetic cake girl. For that reason, it took me a while to satisfy my sweet tooth in Berlin. I found that cakes here were not quite my taste: the texture was dry and the sponge was often lacking in flavor. The frosting would often be good (creamy and not very sweet), but not the cake itself. Oh, and the cake to frosting ratio is a different story! On many occasions, it feels like buying frosting with sprinklings of cake in between. On the bright side, this pushed me to branch out from cakes. Over the course of years, I went out on a hunt for different types of desserts in Berlin. Success! I was soon swooned. You can now benefit from my years of research! Here is a list of some of my favourite places to satisfy your sweet tooth in Berlin, Germany!
The Best Donuts Ever! - Brammibals Donuts - I dare to find a better donut! What started out as a small business in Berlin has bloomed into a chain continuously opening new stores across Germany. There's a reason Brammibals is so popular. These pastries are amazing!! You'd never know they are vegan! The donuts have a great texture and the taste is out of this world! Another pull factor is that flavours rotate each month - keeping you coming back for a sweet adventure. The best ones I've had are: Tiramisu, Rhubarb Crumble, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Sandbuckthorn Turmeric, Pumpkin Spice and Apple Pie. They also have donuts inspired by traditional German desserts such as: Bratapfel and Donauweller. Honestly though, it’s hard to go wrong with anything you choose! I recommend visiting the Potsdamer Platz store, it's my personal favorite and close to popular sites such as Brandenburg Gate and Mall of Berlin.
Spaghetti Eis- a German kids' favourite! It's ice cream made to look like spaghetti. This treat consists of whipped cream buried under noodles made of vanilla ice cream. The "noodles" are topped with strawberry sauce and white chocolate shavings. Some stores such as Cafe E. Gelato in Potsdamer Platz (my favorite place for this delicacy) offers different flavor variations of Spaghetti Eis in case you might prefer a different match up.
Chimneys- How I love these! Chimney cones are linked to Hungary and Czech Republic. Though not German, these tasty treats offer a very yummy dessert experience in case you're not able to make it take Eastern Europe. They are freshly made, warm cones that are typically rolled in cinnamon sugar, then filled with ice cream and a wide variety of toppings. Chimneys offers many different combos, which will keep you coming back for more. Also it's vegan, but definitely doesn't taste like it! The restaurant is very elegantly decorated so it welcomes you sit and dine in style.
Cinnamon Rolls - these are called Zimtschneke in Germany. I actually disliked these treats before coming to Berlin, but wow, did Zeit für Bröt change my mind!!! Germany specializes in bread and that's perhaps that why, this local bakery makes a spectacular version of these sweet buns. No going around it- they are flat out amazing!!! Ultra Fluffy, soft, warm (the chocolate ones will be full of gooey, melted chocolate), huge, flavourful! So good! I've never had a better Zimtschneke anywhere! My absolute faves are the Raspberry White Chocolate and Dark Chocolate! You need to try these immediately!
Tigertörtchen- After my disappointment with German cakes, I discovered this gourmet bakery that makes amazing cupcakes! They are moist, beautifully decorated and so delicious! Not to the mention the creativity of the flavours. What's unique about this place is that they sell mini cupcakes, so you typically order a tray of 6, which allows you try several flavours. We aren't talking about ordinary flavours here: think. Enjoy German classics such as Schwarzwalderkirschtorte (Black Forest Cake) or Frankfurter Kranz. It's also so cute that here you can enjoy a classic tea break, here. Located near the tourist sites of Alexanderplatz and the Berlin Dome, it's a great place to rest a tourist's weary legs.
Churrolade- enjoy next level churros at a little neighborhood store called Churrolade. This store has a simple, down to earth vibe though the interior is quite detailed and tasteful. Their offerings go from simple churros to ones with dynamic toppings. Think strawberries, Nutella, white chocolate, cookies, smarties and more! The menu also includes enticing shakes and smoothies.
Wonder Waffle- Berliners love a good waffle and great quality ice cream. Get the best of both worlds at Wonderful Waffle. Enjoy a freshly made, soft waffle beautifully arrayed with an ice cream flavor of your choice and delicious customized toppings. Truly a satisfying experience!
Cicala Caffetteria Italiana - This Italian pastry shop is a hidden gem! Very local, fairly priced and unpretentious. I love that they offer mini versions of many menu items. This means you can try a couple different sweets without feeling guilty. Definitely try the Cannoli and Pistachio filled croissant! Yum!
Du Bonheur- I've never had pastry like this before. This French based patisserie offers chic, exquisite delights. I highly recommend the. You can find it close to the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße.
Crêpe Cakes- Korean cafes are popping up more and more around Berlin. This brings with it delicious crêpe cakes! They are soft, tasty and not too sweet! The best ones I've had were at Simply Cafe and Cafe de Luna.
